Local administration starts taking details of the Koshi flood victims

The district administration of Sunsari has begun taking details of the people displaced by the Koshi flood.

The district administration office (DAO) has taken the step as the number goes higher than the actual population in government records in the four VDCs that are submerged due to floods caused by the damage in Koshi embankment. Reports put the displaced population as high as 60,000 whereas local authorities say the population in the VDCs is less than 50,000.

Chief District Officer (CDO) Durga Bhandari said citizenship cards or voters identification card has been necessary to enroll in the list to receive relief support and to make the distribution of facilities easier.

In the meantime, the rescue operation has been intensified as the water level goes down. But villagers and local authorities fear further havoc as the river has changed its regular course.

Sapta Koshi shifted the course 1.5 km towards east, sweeping away large chunk of land in Shripur VDC. nepalnews.com ia Aug 22 08
